India vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI Highlights: The only point when Sri Lanka looked like they might be able to put the the Indian target of of 374 under any kind of pressure is when Dhananjaya de Silva and Pathum Nissanka put up a 72-run partnership off 65 balls for the fourth wicket. Sri Lanka otherwise looked toothless until Dasun Shanaka started going big guns in the last 10 overs. While it was all too late, Shanaka managed to score a century, almost providing an example to his fellow batters for what could have happened had they stuck around. Earlier, Virat Kohli's 45th ODI century helped India get to a score of 373/7. India lead three-match series 1-0.

Shanaka finishes the match with a six. He ends unbeaten on 108 off 88 balls. The Indians don't look too happy with this. They should have probably wrapped this match up 15 overs ago. Kumar Sangakkara has said a number of times in the commentary box today that Dasun Shanaka has to come higher up the order and there is little argument against that considering how he dismantled the Indian attack in the last 10 overs. He could have started this process a little earlier as well but all in all, a valiant innings from the Sri Lanka captain, something that his teammates can use as an example.

The openers allowed me to get into the game and I tried to keep my strike rate in check. I was happy I was able to maintain the tempo and we finished with 370. I would take those (dropped chances) any day. Luck plays a big part, you need to thank god on such evenings. These evenings are important, pretty aware of that. Thankful that I made the most of that luck presented to me. I helped the team get 20 runs extra, rather than 350. It's going to be the same thing. Someone will have to score a 150, or 140 to chase this down. But it also gives our bowlers a chance to bowl with dew coming into play. I am quite aware of what I eat, diet is the most important thing at this age. That keeps me in prime shape. That helps me give my 100 percent for the team.

He has scored 44 ODI centuries and 64 fifties and he recently broke his drought of tons in the format that went on for more than three years. Virat Kohli is looking to rediscover the form that made him a century machine averaging more than 60 in ODIs until 2019 but the fact remains that dropping him for a young player, regardless of how talented the latter may be, doesn't seem like a very good idea at the moment.
